Sunflower Sketch #3

© 2008 Vernita Bridges-Hoyt
Sunflower Sketch #3
Third of Series
3.5" x 3.5" colored pencil on Mi-Tientes paper

Tonight I enjoyed sketching this sunflower in colored pencil. Each medium presents a sunflower differently. My colored pencil approach is generally more detailed than my technique with oil paint, but I am learning how to paint with the pencils rather than draw. By painting, I am almost able to get the look of watercolor washes with the colored pencils. Learning a new technique is always fun.

Sunflower in Studio Window WIP 4

© V. Bridges-Hoyt 2008
As you can see on the still life set up to the left, the sunflowers have wilted in the vase after several days. I pushed to finish the sunflowers and have them where I want them to be. A close-up detail is posted below.

Next, I will focus on painting the blue table linen. Watch for the update in a few days.

This is the second of four small sunflower sketches to become a series. This one was begun in pastel and detailed with colored pencil. Check in at One Painting a Day for availability.

Sunflower in Studio Window WIP 1, 2, 3

One sunflower is started. Even this little bit of paint indicates sunflower. I know the blooms won't last too much longer, so I must work quickly to finish the flower heads.

I really do love sunflowers. When days are dismal, a bright yellow sunflower cheers up the day. This is the second stage of this work-in-progress. Most of the darks have been painted. Next I will be adding enough local color to cover the canvas. Please check back in a day or two for the next update on this sunflower painting.

Sunflower Spirit of Ladybug

Question: "At the end of the day, what really matters?"
Answer: "Not much. Really, not much matters. At the end of the day if you smiled more than you frowned, laughed more than you cried, told your family and friends you loved them, and had a pretty good time doing what you do for a living, then it was a good day. Go to bed and say thanks." --Winget, Larry. Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get a Life. John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Hoboken, New Jersey. 2004

Sunflower Frost

Last summer I fell in love with sunflowers.

"SUNFLOWER FROST"
copyright Vernita Bridges-Hoyt 2006

"Sunflower Frost" is mixed media--watercolor background and sunflowers rendered in watercolor and colored pencil. I will be doing a series of SUNFLOWERS to benefit
The Sunshine Kids Foundation, a highly rated charity.

The Sunshine Kids Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to children with cancer. Established in 1982, the Foundation is committed to providing positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients. The Sunshine Kids provides a variety of programs and events, free of charge, for kids who are receiving cancer treatments in hospitals across North America.

One in the Sun

[in a private collection in Houston]
Colored Pencil 4"x4", matted and framed to 8"x10"
One in the Sun
My sunflower series starts with this small rendering (pendering) done in pure colored pencil with no watercolor or solvents added. It's only colored pencil. It is not meant to be photo realism but rather my impression of the sunflowers.

It's a little hard to get a good digital photo or scan of pure colored pencil. I will have to practice that process. Most likely I will just paint in the mixed media of watercolor and colored pencil since I like the look of those two together. Also, using the watercolor allows me to hold a brush in my hand. There is something about a brush in my hand ...
